Emergency Relief Program

The Emergency Relief Program was introduced in 1984 to provide financial relief to people in crisis. The program is funded by Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.

The purpose of the program is to deliver emergency, financial or other assistance to individuals and families who are in immediate financial crisis.

The objective of the Emergency Relief Program is to assist people to deal with their immediate crisis situation in a way that maintains their dignity and encourages self-reliance.

The Coordinator can achieve this objective by providing:

  • short term emergency financial assistance and/or

  • appropriate referrals to other services that help to address the underlying causes of financial crisis, eg. financial counseling services

The Emergency Relief Program is not an income support payment. It is expected that in most cases assistance is for a one-off purpose and that clients do not develop a dependence on regular or frequent assistance.

All details (name, address, etc) regarding clients are confidential.
